How Many Decks in Blackjack: What the Rules and Odds Say

New Jersey and Pennsylvania rules set blackjack's deck minimums, and each extra deck lifts the house edge, from 0.014% at one deck to 0.577% at eight.

A blackjack game can be dealt from a single deck or from as many as eight, and the answer to how many decks in blackjack depends on the game and the state it is dealt in. New Jersey's blackjack card rules set a floor of one deck and lift it to six or eight decks when certain side wagers are offered. Every deck added also moves the odds: with the table rules held fixed, the house edge runs from 0.014% with one deck to 0.577% with eight.

How many decks are used in blackjack?

Between one and eight, with the state rulebook setting the minimum for each version of the game. As of October 2026, New Jersey's code requires at least one deck at any blackjack table, then sets a deck count by the type of game:

  • One or two decks when the cards are dealt from the hand.
  • Four decks when the additional wager or the progressive blackjack wager is offered.
  • Six or eight decks when the match-the-dealer wager or the optional bonus wager is on the layout.

Pennsylvania starts from the same place. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board's deck rule calls for at least one deck of identical cards plus at least one cover card. When a casino deals from a non-continuous automatic shuffler, the minimum rises to at least two decks. Those decks are changed at least once every 24 hours, with a separate schedule for games dealt from the hand.

Does the number of decks affect the odds?

Yes, and always in the same direction: more decks, higher house edge. The Wizard of Odds deck-count comparison holds every other rule fixed (blackjack paying at the standard rate, doubling after a split allowed, a continuous shuffling machine) and assumes the player uses basic strategy. On that rule set, the edge by deck count reads:

DecksHouse edge
10.014%
20.341%
40.499%
60.551%
80.577%

The steepest step is the first one. Going from one deck to two adds more to the edge than going from two decks all the way to eight. Across the full range, the gap between eight decks and one is 0.563 percentage points.

Single deck vs double deck blackjack

A single-deck game beats a double-deck game on the same rules, and double deck blackjack beats any shoe of four or more. In the comparison above, two decks sit at 0.341% against 0.551% for a six-deck shoe.

The caveat is the phrase "on the same rules." The table isolates the deck count. A one-deck or two-deck game that changes other rules is a different game, and these figures do not price it. In New Jersey, hand-dealt games are the ones the code limits to one or two decks, so single and double deck blackjack usually means cards dealt from the dealer's hand rather than from a shoe.

Why do blackjack games use different numbers of decks?

Part of the answer is written into the regulations: the deck count follows the wagers and the equipment at the table. New Jersey ties its minimums to the side bets offered, requiring six or eight decks for the match-the-dealer and optional bonus wagers and four for the additional or progressive wager. Pennsylvania ties its two-deck minimum to the use of a non-continuous automatic shuffler.

So the number of decks at a given table tells a reader something about what else that table is selling. A shoe of six or eight decks in New Jersey may be there because a side wager requires it.

How many decks in blackjack is best?

For a recreational player, the fewest decks on offer under the same rules. Wizard of Odds puts it directly: the fewer the decks, the better the odds for that player. The difference is small in absolute terms, measured in fractions of a percentage point, and it never removes the house edge. It is a reason to read the table card before sitting down, not a promise of a result.

Letters: your questions

Does the number of decks affect the odds in blackjack?

Yes. With the table rules held fixed, the published figures show the house edge rising with every deck added, from 0.014% at one deck to 0.577% at eight.

Is double deck blackjack better than a six-deck shoe?

On the same rules, yes. The two-deck game carries a 0.341% edge against 0.551% for six decks, a gap of 0.21 percentage points in the player's favour.

What is the fewest decks a casino can use for blackjack?

One. Both New Jersey and Pennsylvania set a minimum of one deck, though each state raises that floor for certain side wagers or shuffling equipment.

How can you increase your chances of winning in blackjack?

Table choice is one lever the published math supports: all else equal, fewer decks give the recreational player better odds. No table choice turns the edge into a guaranteed win.
