You are going to hit on sixteen. Sixteen. Against a dealer showing a six. You know what? You will probably lose. But you will hit because "anything can happen." Anything can happen. But some things are more likely than other things. That is called probability. You are about to ignore it.

The chart exists for a reason. It is called basic strategy. Every single mathematician who ever looked at blackjack agrees on what to do in every situation. You do not think you are smarter than all the mathematicians. You are not. You just do not want to follow the rules.

You are going to split tens. Tens! You got twenty. Twenty is almost a lock. But the dealer is showing a six so you split because "I got lucky last time." You got lucky. Now you are unlucky. You busted one and the dealer busted. You won a hundred instead of two hundred. You feel like you made the right call because "something good happened." No. You made a bad call that happened to work out.

The Money Mistakes

You are going to change your bet size every hand. Two hands winning and you bet double. You are losing three in a row and you bet half. This is not money management. This is panic. Your brain is making decisions based on emotion, not mathematics.

You are going to believe the dealer when they say "we all lose sometimes." The dealer is right. But the dealer is also making money while you lose. Do not mistake sympathy for help. The dealer is watching you make mistakes. The dealer is pleased.

You are going to play too many hands. You are going to sit at the table for six hours straight. You are going to take "one more spin" of the shoe. Fatigue kills discipline. Discipline is all you have. When you lose discipline, you lose money.

The Belief Mistakes

You believe the deck is hot. You believe the dealer is cutting the cards weird. You believe the last guy at the table is a luckbox and you should not sit next to him. None of this is true. None of this is how blackjack works. You are seeing patterns because humans see patterns everywhere, even when there are no patterns.

You believe you can feel when a good card is coming. You cannot. The cards come in order. The order is random. Your intuition has no power over randomness.

You believe that if you lose bad enough, your luck has to turn around. Wrong. Luck does not turn. Luck is not a thing. What you are experiencing is variance around a mean. The mean is you losing money. Variance just decides how quickly you get there.

You believe that card counting is easy and you can do it in an hour. Card counting is hard. You need to practice for weeks. The casino wants you to try. They love card counters who do not know what they are doing. It gives them an excuse to shuffle more and reduce everyone's win rate.

You are going to lose. That is the math. The house has a 0.5 percent edge on blackjack if you play perfect basic strategy. If you do not play perfect basic strategy, the house edge is maybe 2 or 3 percent. Over time, that 0.5 or 2 percent turns into a hole you are standing in. The only variable is how deep the hole gets before you walk away.
